They are part of a wish for a sweet and prosperous New Year.
- Apple in Honey: A sweet year.
- Pomegranate: To be filled with mitzvot (good deeds) and merits.
- Dates: That our enemies/detractors be consumed.
- Leeks or Chard: That our enemies be cut down.
- Beets: That our adversaries depart.
- Gourds/Squash: That our merits be read and evil decrees ripped up.
- Black-eyed Peas or Fenugreek: That our merits increase.
- Carrots: That our decrees be nullified and merits increased.
- Head of Fish/Sheep: To be as the head (leaders) and not the tail (followers)
