Choose options
Lyda & Liesje is the haunting story of an attempted rescue of a Dutch child during the Holocaust. It is the English version of a book originally written and published in Dutch by historian, Jan de Roos.
The true nature of both the saviours and persecutors of Jews in wartime Holland is revealed in this poignant and timely book.
Jan details Liesje’s innocent and happy childhood as revealed in the descriptions from the diaries her mother painstakingly wrote detailing her development, which are now housed in the Children’s Memorial of the Sydney Jewish Museum. He reveals the bravery of Lyda as she tried to save the young girl, at risk always to her own life. Stories of cruelty and of supreme sacrifice make up this book which has been so carefully researched by the author.
The Sydney Jewish Museum’s Community Stories department is tasked with preserving and sharing narratives that illuminate the human experience. It is within this framework that the poignant tale of Liesje Prins, a young Dutch child whose life was tragically touched by the Holocaust, finds its voice.
