Growing up in England's post-war Liverpool, a tough dockland city with a unique character all of its own, this memoir pieces together snapshots of the life of a lively Jewish boy trying to find his place in English society which, at the time, barely concealed an ever present undercurrent of thinly veiled anti-Semitism.

His attempts to 'fit in' were made difficult thanks to his family which considered all gentiles beneath them. What saved the boy from his loving but claustrophobic family was his Grandpa, whose love and equanimity helped him cope with the dysfunctional dynamics which pervaded his home.
