As we plan for our Museum Expansion project, we anticipate the Museum’s new entry, right under the magnificent menorah relief sculpture you see on our building. This menorah was crafted in 1965 by the esteemed Australian artist Lyndon Dadswell, and is an icon that we will preserve, to light the way into the future.

Dadswell's artistic journey was marked by a profound dedication to sculpture, honed during his studies at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School), a close neighbour to our museum. His early works had the hallmarks of traditional craftsmanship and often showcased human figures.

Notably, his works include 12 large relief stone panels that are placed inside Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, paying homage to Australia's armed forces.

Having served in World War II and later appointed as a War Artist due to his talents, Dadswell's artistic talents flourished upon his return to Sydney. In 1966, he took up the prestigious role of Head of Fine Arts at East Sydney Technical College, further solidifying his impact on the Australian art scene.

We are privileged to be custodians of on of Dadswell's monumental masterpieces, now prominently featured as the face of our expanded museum’s design.

His menorah is strikingly abstract, with sharp yet balanced horizontal and vertical lines that climb the building.

It is with great pride that we showcase Dadswell’s menorah in our Museum Shop, brought to life in our ‘Architectural’ collection of linen challah covers and ceramic mezuzot and kiddush cups. These ceramic pieces have been crafted by the talented Australian artist Ali Sobel Read.
