Their stories, along with stories from Indigenous and refugee leaders, inspire us to do more and to give more. These incredible individuals demonstrate how much power derives from simply having an idea, running with it and turning a dream into reality.

Just over 20 years ago in Melbourne, a small group of committed Jews struggled with how to confront the genocide occurring in Rwanda. Rather than send aid as part of the general community rescue appeal, a new vehicle, Keshet (meaning Rainbow), was established to express the need for an identifiable Jewish response to this tragedy. The crisis in Rwanda abated, but the wish to contribute something to make the world a better place endured. Around our kitchen tables, with no paid staff, various ideas were hatched and acted upon, gradually building in audacity and scope.

A food rescue organisation was born and later blossomed into the thriving endeavour known as Fareshare, distributing over a million meals a year to the food insecure. In parallel, projects were undertaken with vulnerable groups such as homeless youth, Indigenous kids at school and foster children, trying to build bridges between those who have and those who are struggling.

As the organisation grew into Jewish Aid Australia and now known as Stand Up, our capacity and dreams grew.

Today, we are a thriving social justice organisation, harnessing the energy of hundreds of volunteers, and energetic and idealistic staff, to work with Indigenous communities in northern New South Wales, and the Yorta Yorta region, as well as with refugee communities from Sudan. Our many education programs, in a variety of Jewish schools are targeting students at all age levels, fostering passions to help others and get involved. We are inspiring and educating a new generation of Jewish leaders.

In his interview for this book, Stand Up's former Chair Danny Almagor refers to greats such as Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." Danny states, "Those sentiments really resonate with me. It's the realisation that although you may think you're just one drop in a massive ocean, if enough drops decide to turn green, the ocean will be green, and there's got to be the first drop that chooses to change."

The people profiled here represent those drops in the ocean that together, have the ripple effect of making the world a better place. We hope their stories inspire you as they have us.

DR ARNOLD SHMERLING

FOUNDING BOARD MEMBER OF STAND UP AND ONE UMBRELLA (NOW FARESHARE)

Hardcover, large format 2016

Book measures 26cm (w) x 34cm (h)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0615/9997/3445/files/standing-up-jewish-australians-committed-to-a-better-world-standingup-1ef09e1d-86a2-4149-b2d3-dd4ca92f8751-5008930.jpg?v=1777833974
https://shop.sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au/products/standing-up-jewish-australians-committed-to-a-better-world-1
