Lily Renee's story has only been told in articles for adults. Young comic book readers are naturally interested in the artists who create the books they love.

In 1938, Lily Renee Wilhelm, a 14-year-old Jewish girl, is living in Vienna when the Nazis march into Austria. Lily's mother finds her a sponsor in England for the Kinderlransporl evacuating refugee children. After England declares war on Germany, the Kinderlransporl children are considered enemy aliens who must report to the police. Once again Lily makes an escape, living in hiding until she learns that her parents have safely evacuated to the United States. After a ship voyage fraught with danger from Nazi torpedoes, teenage Lily reunites with her parents in New York and helps her family earn a living by painting designs on wooden boxes. One day she sees an ad in the paper: a comics publisher is looking for artists. Lily has never drawn comics before, but teaches herself how they work. She is hired to draw the character Senorita Rio, a beautiful spy fighting the Nazis., During the 1940s, Lily Renee was also the artist for the series The Lost World and Werewolf Hunters, and was one of the few female artists of the time who regularly drew comic book covers. Author Trina Robbins has built her book around extensive interviews with Lily Renee and extensive research to make sure the details are factually correct.

Industry Reviews

Like the comic books that Lily Renee Wilheim drew in the 1940s as a pioneer woman in a male-dominated industry, this biography is a tale of peril and suspense. Lily, an affluent Austrian Jewish girl, was one of the last children to be transported safely to England in 1939. After a few years with a sponsor family, she got a series of jobs caring for children and in a maternity hospital. After England entered the war, she lost contact with her parents and was later classified as an enemy alien. The tale of her reconciliation with her family in America and subsequent success as a graphic artist is classically upbeat. The book is drawn in a style that seems to imitate Wilheim's wartime comics-gestures and expressions are stylized and formal; characters stand or move stiffly. Think Brenda Starr, Girl Reporter. Add to this drawing style a tendency toward melodrama and few named characters except the subject and this book might be a tough sell. Improving its odds is back matter that includes a gallery of photographs of the charismatic Lily and brief essays on subjects as diverse as the British monetary system and the Automat. --School Library Journal

Graphic Universe Press, 2011, softcover

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0615/9997/3445/files/lily-renee-escape-artist-from-holocaust-survivor-to-comic-book-pioneer-trina-robbins-anne-timmons-illustrator-mo-oh-illustrator-lilyrenee-1-3753297.jpg?v=1770625152
https://shop.sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au/products/lily-renee-escape-artist-from-holocaust-survivor-to-comic-book-pioneer-trina-robbins-anne-timmons-illustrator-mo-oh-illustrator
